While spring may be just around the corner, and the days are getting longer in the Northern Hemisphere, winter’s impact on the skin can still be felt.  Winter is a take-me-on-my-own-terms kind of season.  Those who embrace winter enjoy the crisp air, the opportunity to take-in snow sports, cozy evenings in front of a roaring fire and hearty meals of comfort foods.  But as lovely as winter may be, winter is hard on the skin leaving us with chapped lips, cracked cuticles, and even flakiness. There are ways to feel absolutely dewy, despite winter’s  wallop.

Let Lotion be Your Potion

While always a good practice, moisturizer is even more important in winter.  And just because those golden rays of sun may be fewer, a moisturizer with an SPF is still important. One area of the body that tends to need extra TLC in winter is the hands. Using a hand cream, treating those cuticles kindly and wearing gloves in the outdoors will help keep hands soft, smooth and spectacular.

Get Your Balm On

Chapped and cracked lips can be uncomfortable and down-right unattractive. To keep lips looking and feeling their best in winter, lip balm is a must.  No need for fancy stuff – just select a product with a consistency that can penetrate rather than sit atop dry skin.  For those spending time in the outdoors, a lip balm with SPF will ensure you’re protected from both sun and dryness.

To Retaliate, Exfoliate

Dryness is inevitable, and shedding that dry skin is important.  The best moisturizer can’t penetrate through layers of dead skin.  To ensure your skin is smooth and receptive to lotions, be sure to exfoliate weekly. Be gentle with sensitive skin and don’t forget to polish up those rough dry heels.

Addressing dryness from the outside is only part of the equation. The most important strategy is to start from the inside-out.  Ensuring you’re drinking enough water is imperative.  We may feel a bit less thirsty in cooler weather than in warmer weather, but the body still needs water to maintain hydration, to ensure removal of waste and toxins and to have optimal body function. Optimal body function includes the skin’s dermis.

Winter…you can’t harden the hydrated.
